We use ASReml 3.0 in a large scale industrial context especially for routine evaluations of animal solutions (as per the .sln output file).

Extracting the animal data from the file (in XL) is not as easy as it could be because the fixed effect solutions have variable and to some extent unpredicatable rows until the first of the random (individual animal) solutions are reached.

If the fixed solutions were in a separate file (eg fn.fix), leaving the animal solutions in a consistent format (ie following the pedigree file) in the .sln file, it would then be trivial to set up a macro to move the animal solution over to XL for automatic processing without leaving the XL environment, or as I do now, cut&paste.
Just a thought I've had for some time....

Dear Derrick,

Most Unix users will be familiar with grep, a tool which extracts lines of a file
containing a particular string. In your case the command would be something like

grep animal analysis.sln > animal.txt
which would extract all lines in 'analysis.sln' and write them to animal.txt.

If you used the !SLNFORM qualifier, the effects could be written to
analysis_sln.csv

Then
grep animal analysis_sln.csv > animal.csv

would make it even easier to load into Excel.

A google search for 'grep for Windows' should help you get a Windows version of grep.

But thanks for the suggestion. Any other users who have suggestions like this are welcome to submit them.

Arthur
