  ASReml  ~  SE / LLRT for genetic correlations with binary traits

Hi All

I am testing for genetic correlations among several traits, including both binary and continuous traits.

My understanding is that treating a binary trait as Gaussian in bivariate animal models will return an unbiased estimate of the genetic correlation.

However, Iím unsure if the standard error estimates for the genetic correlation returned by ASReml are similarly unbiased. Also, Iím unsure if significance testing using loglikelihood ratio tests (where the alternate model has the genetic correlation constrained to 0) is appropriate in this scenario.

So my questions are:

-Is it appropriate to report the standard error given by ASReml of a genetic correlation when one or both traits do not follow a normal distribution (i.e. binary traits or continuous traits with large skew) but the analysis is performed assuming Gaussian data?

-Can loglikelihood ratio tests be used for significance testing of genetic correlations in the above scenario?

Apologies if these are silly questions Ė any help would be greatly appreciated.
